Fort Myers police arrest man accused of fleeing traffic stop, driving with suspended license
Fort Myers police arrested a man on Sunday after accusing him of fleeing from a traffic stop while driving with a suspended license.
According to the Fort Myers Police Department arrest report, at approximately 11:56 p.m., an officer observed a vehicle traveling south on Solomon Boulevard toward Winkler Avenue. The officer noticed the vehicle stop beyond the white stop bar at a red light, prompting a traffic stop.
The vehicle stopped at the entrance to the Edison Mall parking lot on Cleveland Avenue. The officer approached the vehicle and requested the driver’s identification.
According to the arrest report, the driver became verbally defensive during the encounter. He told the officer he did not have his wallet with him and did not have any identification inside the vehicle because the vehicle did not belong to him.
The driver then verbally provided a name and date of birth. As the officer returned to the patrol vehicle to continue the investigation, the driver allegedly accelerated through the parking lot and fled the traffic stop.
During the investigation, the officer identified the driver as R., 35, by reviewing previous traffic stops involving the same vehicle, according to the report.
Officers later tracked the vehicle to an apartment complex and located R. inside an apartment. Authorities said he was initially uncooperative and refused to leave the residence, but after speaking with an officer, he exited the apartment and surrendered.
R. was arrested and charged with fleeing and eluding law enforcement, providing false identification to a law enforcement officer, and driving with a suspended license.
